When the Golden Age of Hollywood is mentioned, people often think of classic black and white films from some of the first studios that were able to make productions with a large budget. The most memorable things about these films were the timeless celebrities that they created through performances that have entertained audiences for decades.

This Golden Age is generally considered to be the period of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Some of the most influential and important films of all time like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Ben-Hur, The Wizard of Oz, and 12 Angry Men were all released during this period. These films changed the art form forever and made cinema a legitimate longstanding business that is still capable of producing profits to this day without much change to a movie house setup.

The historical reasons for this age are mostly a consequence of many of the most important players in the film industry moving from New York to Hollywood. As films began to use sound in the prior decades, many smaller studios could no longer compete and a few major players such as MGM, Warner Brothers, Universal, and Disney emerged to take control of most major releases. This small list of film studios would become like a dynasty that held a tight grip on every aspect of the industry. This was at least in part because of some of the low-budget, low-quality films that smaller studios had consistently churned out without much regard to lasting appeal and building a long-term audience. Some of this change was also because films with sound had premiered in the late 1920s, and silent film, along with the art of producing them was becoming obsolete. Businesses that could not adapt to these changes died off.

The Golden Age was mostly a consequence of a regimented form of production by the major studios that would often include the same actors over and over again who was contracted to one major player. There were many productions from this time that were mostly forgotten, however, some of the films created in this assembly line manner ended up becoming classics. This era also pioneered many filmmaking techniques that made the stories seem much more believable and real through what is now considered proper use of editing, space, and continuity, along with the use of sound and songs to help engage the audience. These changes elevated the film from a novelty or a distraction to a more legitimate art form. Films such as Citizen Kane and The Wizard of Oz in particular are highly regarded for pioneering modern filmmaking techniques.

Here is a quiz that contains many of the most important names and faces of the era. Try to see how many you can guess right and see how much of a classic film expert you are. Some should be obvious while others are a lot harder to guess unless you are very familiar with this period. Let's get started!
